In the Diocese of Ontario, our canon pastor is specifically tasked with overseeing the diocesan response to harassment, misconduct, or abuse—particularly in cases involving clergy, staff, or volunteers. This role blends pastoral care with safeguarding responsibilities as outlined in diocesan sexual misconduct policies.

Canon Pastor’s Role in Misconduct Response

Point of contact: Serves as a confidential and compassionate first point of contact for individuals reporting harassment, sexual misconduct, or abuse within the church.

Pastoral support: Offers emotional and spiritual care to complainants, respondents, and affected communities during and after investigations.

Policy implementation: Works closely with diocesan leadership to ensure that all reports are handled according to established procedures and canonical guidelines.

Collaboration: Coordinates with bishops, legal advisors, and diocesan leadership to guide appropriate responses and ensure accountability.

Education & prevention: May lead training sessions on boundaries, safe church practices, and creating respectful environments.

This role requires a deep commitment to justice, confidentiality, and healing—balancing the need for procedural integrity with the church’s pastoral mission.
