Synod Council met on Tuesday, October 27th for an evening of reflection, planning, and updates on several important areas of diocesan life. The meeting opened with a thoughtful devotion led by the Rev. Sharon Dunlop, who invited Council members to reflect on the idea of "marinating" in faith. Drawing on Tattoos on the Heart by Fr. Gregory Boyle, she encouraged members to consider how God's love and grace shape us over time, much as a marinade transforms food through patience and immersion.

Bishop William shared news from around the Diocese, including the recent 200th anniversary celebration of the church in Maitland, upcoming confirmations, and the ordination of the Rev. Robert Stewart on November 1. He also highlighted a diocesan vocations event on the morning of November 7th at St. John's, Portsmouth, inviting people to explore where God may be calling them in service and ministry. Members also heard about the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ordination of women to the priesthood which will be held on the afternoon of December 6th at St. Mark’s Barriefield.

Council received updates on the Diocese's finances and property stewardship efforts. While economic conditions remain challenging, the Diocese continues to be in a strong financial position, with careful planning helping to support both current ministry and future needs. Work also continues evaluating several disused church properties and exploring responsible options that honour the legacy of these sacred spaces while supporting the mission of the Church. Discussion also focused on developing the 2027 budget, ongoing support for parishes facing financial pressures, and exploring future office space options that could improve accessibility while reducing costs.

Council heard encouraging reports from diocesan ministries and national church partners. The DOORS refugee ministry continues its important work of welcoming and supporting newcomers, while also responding to changing federal immigration policies that affect refugee sponsorship efforts. Over the summer and fall, Mimi Merrill and Rana Sara have been developing a new three-year strategic plan and formalizing policies and procedures to strengthen the program's governance and operations. Council heard that the addition of part-time staffing support has proven highly beneficial, particularly in managing the increasing administrative and compliance requirements associated with refugee sponsorship.

Council received an update on the work of the Green Group. The annual Green Group conference held in September was a success, and planning is already underway for the 2027 event. Appreciation was expressed for the dedicated leadership of the outgoing chair, Paula Walker, whose service helped guide both the group's work and conference planning. Mary Raddon will act as the interim chair while a new chair is sought.

Council members also heard a report from Archdeacon Bill Clarke, our diocesan representative for Alongside Hope (formerly PWRDF). Following a recent national gathering that brought together staff, board members, diocesan representatives, and international partners, participants reflected on shared successes and common challenges facing dioceses across the country. Conversations focused on engagement, partnership, and strengthening support for ministry both locally and globally. Within the Diocese of Ontario, Alongside Hope Sunday was held on October 25th. News about services held across the diocese will be shared at an upcoming Synod Council meeting. It was agreed that the 4th Sunday of October will be designated for Alongside Hope every year going forward.

In a spirit of civic engagement and prayerful support, Synod Council unanimously approved a motion extending congratulations to newly elected municipal leaders throughout the Diocese of Ontario. The motion also recognized and thanked all those who offered themselves for public service, whether elected or not, and committed the Diocese's prayers for wisdom, strength, and discernment in their leadership.

Throughout the meeting, there was a strong sense of gratitude for the many people who contribute to the life of the Diocese, from clergy and parish leaders to volunteers, staff, and community partners. As the Church continues to navigate change, Synod Council's discussions reflected a commitment to faithful stewardship, compassionate ministry, and a hopeful vision for the future.
