Part Time Director of Music, Kingston Ontario

Princess Street United Church (PSUC) www.psuc.ca and St. Luke’s Anglican Church are seeking to hire a Music Director for their combined worship service at 10am Sunday.

This is a contract position to start as soon as possible. Payment is per weekly worship service based on about 6 hrs preparation & performance time, invoiced and paid monthly. More hours would be available if the successful applicant is willing to form, lead and rehearse with a choir.

Currently, the PSUC congregation is worshipping with St. Luke’s Anglican Church while renovations to the worship space at Princess Street United Church are undertaken. The music director would not be required on the first Sunday of the month, but must be available on the remaining Sundays. Other Sundays away would be negotiated in advance. The sanctuary has a well-maintained 1919 Casavant organ, rebuilt by Hill Norman & Beard 1962, and an older Newcombe cabinet grand piano.

Our ideal candidate will have strong musical skills and proven experience to play keyboard instruments. Preference will be given to those with organ experience or interested in learning and with the capability to find and include other instrumental and vocal accompaniments in worship.

We invite interested candidates to apply to: psunited@kingston.net.

Please include a covering letter, resume including references, and video or audio clip demonstrating keyboard proficiency (required) and choral conducting skills (if possible).

  • Be the primary organist/pianist at scheduled services including Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday and other special services as required.
  • Attend regular worship planning meetings with the minister.
  • Choose hymns for weekly and special services in collaboration with the minister.
  • When available, provide music for special services such as funerals and weddings.
  • Work with soloist(s) and a small choir, to which we want to attract more voices.
  • Be familiar with, or willing to learn, contemporary Christian music for worship services, in addition to traditional hymns and other music.
