LIT 1 (Leader-in-Training) A 13 night / 14 day coed leadership program for qualified Christian 15- and 16-year-olds. The LIT Camp is an intense but rewarding program led by the camp’s leadership directors and offers a mix of educational sessions, camp leadership opportunities, physical training, and free time activities. Participants can choose from 3 session dates and will learn: childcare and communication skills, leadership styles and skills, camp operations, program development, and child abuse awareness. Participants will also engage in daily Bible study and discussion. Each session is limited to 8 participants on a first received/first accepted basis. When necessary, priority will be given to campers who have previously demonstrated camp leadership potential. We reserve the right to decline any LIT application that is deemed unsuitable for this rigorous training experience. |

At the beginning of the week campers prepare for a canoe out-trip with lots of canoeing practice and lessons in preparing for extended camping experiences. For the remainder of the week campers will paddle and camp, including cooking their own meals and learning about the ecology and history of the Rideau Canal. This camp is limited to 8 campers; some familiarity with canoeing is preferred. |

Survivor Challenge Camp A 6 night / 7 day coed for campers age 11-14. Campers will begin the week with training in orienteering and various outdoor survival skills. During the last portion of the week campers will have an opportunity to test their new-found skills and abilities, through a series of survivor challenges. This camp also includes canoeing day trips. These camps provide youth with a unique opportunity to experience the challenge and rewards of outdoor survival, appreciate their natural environment, learn new skills, and be tested physically.

Staff Positions at Camp Hyanto
There are 3 main specifications of staff positions at Camp Hyanto:
- C.I.T. (Counsellor In Training) - Age 16 and up
- Regular Staff - Age 17 and up
- Senior Staff - Age 19 and up
The expectation for each job position offered in these three areas is the same:
- a Christian who actively supports the purpose, philosophy, goals, and objectives of Camp Hyanto;
- willing to obtain a criminal record reference check to investigate any convictions, particularly those relating to child abuse, and submit a copy of this check to the Executive Director;
- willing to volunteer at one Camp Hyanto Work Bee;
- willing to live in a residential setting with one 24-hour period off a week for the months of July and August;
- very familiar with/understand Canon 35c in the canons of the Diocese of Ontario.
C.I.T. July positions full
The C.I.T. position is a volunteer position in which you gain 4 weeks of experience at Camp Hyanto. Participants in the C.I.T. program spend a week on Maintenance, a week in the Kitchen, and 2 weeks Counselling. There are a minimum of 4 female and 4 male positions available.
- Live in residence at Camp Hyanto during term of placement (July-August).
- Assist Camp Hyanto kitchen staff and custodial staff for a minimum of one week each.
- Assist Land Counsellors for a minimum of five weeks, or B if qualified B assist Land Counsellors and Waterfront Program Staff on an alternating schedule.
- Attend scheduled CIT sessions as well as general staff meetings.
- Work cooperatively with camp staff and perform other duties as required to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christian camping experience for all.
- Participate with enthusiasm in all activities and maintain open communication with all staff members.
- Ask questions, have fun, observe, and learn about Camp Hyanto.
- Adhere to established camp rules, procedures, and routines through supervision and personal example.
Regular Staff
There are 2 different job areas under the regular staff specification and those are the counsellor and/or waterfront counsellor, and the kitchen assistant positions.
Counsellor
The counsellor positions are paid positions. There are a minimum of 6 female and 4 male positions available. The counsellors are placed with a co-counsellor each week and assigned a cabin of up to 10 campers. It is the counsellor’s duty to look after the campers for the week and maintain a safe, happy, and fun environment for the children to enjoy. Enthusiastically support the program developed by the Program Directors.
- Work cooperatively with camp staff and perform other duties as required, to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christian camping experience for all.
- Adhere to established camp rules, procedures, and routines.
- Assist campers in becoming more comfortable with their new camp environment.
- Assist campers in developing their physical skills in sports and recreational games and activities.
- Assist campers in developing their social skills, i.e. table manners, respect for cabin mates and leaders, the camp environment, etc. Encourage friendships and respect among campers.
- Assist campers in developing emotionally and spiritually through encouragement, listening, caring, and setting a good Christian example. Help enable campers to increase their self-confidence, ability to pray, and positive attitude toward Christian living.
- Provide creativity, enthusiasm, and the spark for Christian camp life at Hyanto.
Waterfront Counsellor
The waterfront counsellor positions are paid positions. The waterfront counsellor position is the same as the counsellor position, with the exception that instead of rotating with groups in the morning and afternoon, the waterfront counsellors are lifeguards on the Camp Hyanto beach and assist with teaching canoeing, kayak, swimming lessons, and any other waterfront activities which may occur. The same expectations listed above, under counsellor, apply to the waterfront counsellor with these added expectations as well:
- Current NLS and Red Cross Instructors certificates
- Provide safe and creative Red Cross swimming lessons/instruction to campers at the appropriate badge level.
- Provide safe and attentive lifeguarding at free swim times.
Kitchen Assistant Poistions Filled
The kitchen assistant positions are paid positions. There are 2 kitchen assistant positions available. The kitchen assistant’s job is to assist in the kitchen with food handling, preparation, and clean-up, as well as to maintain a clean, safe dining hall environment for the rest of the staff and campers.
- Adhere to established camp and kitchen rules, procedures, and routines.
- Organize table trays with appropriate number of utensils, dishes, and condiments for each table group.
- Assist with the preparation, handling, and serving of food.
- Wash dishes in the dishwasher and put them away. Assist with all necessary hand washing of pots/pans, etc.
- Assist with the storage of food orders when delivered.
- Assist with the maintenance and cleaning of the dining hall.
- Participate in general camp life whenever possible; attend scheduled staff training and spiritual direction sessions as well as general staff meetings.
- Work cooperatively with camp staff and perform other duties as required to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christian camping experience for all.
- Participate with enthusiasm in all activities and maintain open communication with all staff members.
Senior Staff
There are several job areas under the senior staff specification and those are the Waterfront Director, Health and Safety Supervisor, Head Counsellor, L.I.T./C.I.T. Coordinator, Canoe/Kayak Coordinator, Maintenance Supervisor, Assistant Cook, and Head Cook.
The senior staff is basically the program and support management of Camp Hyanto. It falls on these job titles, and the individuals under them, to assist the Executive Director in maintaining Camp Hyanto and everything that we offer here.
Waterfront Director
Ensure that the highest standards of water safety practices are observed by effective supervision, coordination, evaluation, and implementation of the Red Cross Water Safety and Royal Life Swim Programs.
- Conduct regular in-service training with waterfront staff and document training program and names of staff present. Study and be very familiar with the Hyanto Spinal Rescue Procedure@ and the AHyanto Waterfront Search Procedure@ files; train waterfront staff in these procedures.
- Ensure that the Buddy board@ system is being used effectively and develop & implement a system to identify swimming levels during open swim times.
- Work cooperatively with the Canoe/Kayak Program Coordinator by actively assisting in the canoe/kayak program instruction.
- Ensure that copies of current waterfront qualifications are kept on file for all waterfront staff.
- Sound the blow horn for missing persons or fire emergencies.
- Ensure all waterfront staff and campers are protected from the sun=s rays with hats, shirts, and waterproof sunscreen (at least 15 SPF) and enforce the use of these protectors.
- Responsible for quality swimming lessons (both in leadership and the evaluation process), lifeguarding of open swim times, and fun but safe special events occurring on the waterfront.
- Evaluative camper swim abilities and organize swim groups and class schedules on arrival day.
- Maintain safe rescue equipment.
- Ensure swim awards are completed and handed out to campers on time.
- Arrange for examiners for RLSSC programs in consultation with the On-site Camp Director.
- Be prompt and professional in all camp duties and work cooperatively with volunteer program staff to accommodate program changes.
- Develop rainy day programs for immediate implementation on such days.
- Maintain professional records on camper swim progress, accident and incident reports, water tests, and weather and clarity notes. Maintain AHyanto Daily Checklist for Waterfront Safety.@
- Work cooperatively with camp staff and perform other duties as required to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christian camping experience for all. Adhere to established camp rules, procedures, and routines through supervision and personal example.
Health and Safety Supervisor Position Filled
To ensure a safe, clean, and healthy camp environment and to promote health and wellness for campers and staff. This individual must be an RPN, nursing or medical student, or Certified Senior First Aider (i.e.: St. Johns First Aid Senior Instructor).
- Adhere to the Ontario Camping Association Guidelines and policies regarding health care at camps.
- Open the Health Care Station, check and maintain inventory of equipment, supplies, medicines, and drugs.
- Make up first aid kits for trips, kitchen, hikes, and rotation stations.
- Prepare and maintain adequate record keeping and filing of camp health forms and daily clinic notes.
- Complete a weekly risk management tour of the camp and cite concerns to the appropriate staff to ensure a repair; report all concerns to the On-site Camp Director.
- Supervise and evaluate the cleanliness of the camp, including the washroom station, both camper and staff cabins, the kitchen, and the dining hall.
- Follow up reports given by staff concerning camper medical problems.
- Be prepared to instruct and encourage campers and staff in personal hygiene and eating habits or first aid if required.
- Conduct a daily drinking water test (chlorine and turbity) and record all testing results. Ensure that the water testing lab contracted for the weekly and monthly water testing is fulfilling its obligations.
- Assist in daily cabin inspections.
- Notify the Camp Physician in the event of serious emergencies and make arrangements with the On-site Camp Director for transportation of the patient to the hospital or as directed by the doctor.
- Keep the On-site Camp Director informed of all concerns and decisions through reports, daily log sheets, and direct communication.
- Be familiar with the requirements of the Medical Directives Manual (Standing Orders) and Ontario Health Regulations.
- Participate where possible in the camp programs to become familiar with campers and staff.
- Follow camp policies and procedures, rules and regulations as outlined in the Hyanto Manual; assist the On-site Camp Director with weekly Emergency Search Drills.
- Work cooperatively with camp staff and perform other duties as required to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christian camping experience for all. Adhere to established camp rules, procedures, and routines through supervision and personal example.
- Dispense medication to children who require physician-prescribed medication during their stay at camp.
Head Counsellor Position Filled
Encourage, supervise, evaluate, and support the leadership of the counselling staff.
- Assist On-site Camp Director with staff training.
- Develop weekly cabin group lists and staff rotation schedule.
- Encourage, supervise, and evaluate leadership skills of counsellors. Work with LIT/CIT Coordinator to encourage, train, and evaluate CITs.
- Establish good communication between counsellors and provide opportunities for discussion at the staff debriefing each week.
- Know and utilize guidelines for conflict management.
- Inform the On-site Camp Director of all incidents, accidents, and counsellor meetings.
- Motivate counsellors and be constantly aware of opportunities to generate a higher level of interest and understanding in the counsellors for their campers.
- Evaluate campfires and encourage creativity among staff; assist Program Director in helping staff with programming responsibilities. Help counselling staff with programmatic planning as necessary.
- Be available for camper/counsellor consultations.
- Understand and promote the camp philosophy, goals, and objectives and set a good example by following Hyanto policies and procedures.
- Be prepared to teach or direct games/activities when requested by the Program Director.
- Supervise & evaluate the Support Assistant, assigning daily areas of work and helping staff create a supportive and encouraging work atmosphere.
- Work cooperatively with camp staff and perform other duties as required to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christian camping experience for all. Adhere to established camp rules, procedures, and routines through supervision and personal example.
- Evaluate counselling staff mid-season and at the end of the camping season.
L.I.T./C.I.T. Coordinator Position Filled
Responsible for the instruction and supervision of the Leader-in-Training program and its participants; weekly Counsellor-in-Training sessions; assist in the supervision and evaluation of the CIT placements.
- Coordinate and implement the LIT program following the camp guidelines and in consultation with the Camp Director, Spiritual Director, and Senior Counsellor.
- Evaluate preset goals of the LIT and CIT program participants and their performance in assigned tasks and programs.
- Work cooperatively with Volunteer Program Staff when coordinating the LITs into their program.
- Be a supportive, motivating Christian leader for the LIT/CIT participants, ensuring policies and procedures are being followed and that the Hyanto philosophy and goals are incorporated into every aspect of the program and their camp life.
- Work cooperatively with fellow summer staff and assist the Chaplain during chapel time.
- Assist the camp with counselling duties when required B including working with campers with special needs.
- Keep the Senior Counsellor and Camp Director informed at all times of program changes or camper challenges that may arise.
- Assist the LITs and CITs in developing personally and spiritually.
- Coordinate weekly program session and performance reviews for the CITs.
- Respond to other camp duties as requested by the Senior Counsellor or Camp Director.
- Work cooperatively with camp staff to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christian camping
experience for all. Adhere to established camp rules, procedures, and routines through supervision and personal example.
Canoe/Kayak Coordinator Position Filled
Plan, organize, and implement quality canoeing/kayaking lessons, skills, and drills at various levels of competency through creative use of song, drama, land and water games, and canoe regattas. Ensure safe canoeing practices by both staff and campers on out-trips by providing pre-trip training and trip leadership and exercising competent rescue expertise if needed. This individual must also have his/her lifeguard certification.
- Organize and instruct canoeing/kayaking lessons for campers and staff at various levels of competency. Evaluate canoeing/kayaking skills of all staff to ensure all are competent at paddling; coach and instruct those in need of practice, and inform all staff of canoeing/kayaking rules and regulations (as described in the Fisheries and Oceans Canada/Coast Guard Safe Boating Guide, 2000).
- Ensure all rules and regulations are strictly enforced on canoe trips and follow Emergency Procedure Guidelines in case of an emergency.
- Assist the Program Director in organizing the weekly canoe/kayak program and ensure that proper water safety practices are observed at all times.
- Ensure that all out-trip equipment is accounted for, cleaned, and properly stored when not in use.
- Document all incident/accident reports and camper medications dispensed while on out-trips.
- Work cooperatively with the Waterfront Director by actively assisting in the swim program and other waterfront activities.
- Assist the Waterfront Director with administrative tasks and with evaluating campers= swimming abilities on arrival day.
- Ensure all staff and campers are protected from the sun=s rays with hats, shirts, and waterproof sunscreen (at least 15 SPF), and enforce the use of these protectors.
- Be prompt and professional in all camp duties and work cooperatively with volunteer program staff to accommodate program changes.
- Develop rainy day programs for immediate implementation on such days.
- Maintain accurate records on camper canoe/kayak progress and assist the Waterfront Director with accident/incident reports, water tests, and documentation of weather and water clarity.
- Maintain safe and accessible rescue equipment and ensure canoe/kayak review cards are completed and handed out to the campers on time.
- Work cooperatively with camp staff and perform other duties as required to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christian camping experience for all. Understand and promote the camp philosophy, goals, and objectives and set a good example by following Hyanto policies and procedures.
- Ensure the Abuddy board@ system is used effectively when campers are at the waterfront during canoeing/kayaking sessions.
- Instruct participants in basic canoeing/kayaking skills, coaching those with more advanced skills, while emphasizing canoe/kayak safety.
- Work with the LIT/CIT Coordinator and the Program Director of Survivor Challenge Camp to plan, organize, and execute appropriate day and out-trips.
- Assume counselling and/or waterfront duties if a substitute is required.
Head Cook Position filled
The employee is responsible for the operation of a healthy and hygienic food service: food handling and preparation, food storage, effective supervision of kitchen staff, and compliance with both O.C.A. and government health regulations in relation to food.
- Attendance at Food Handling and Preparation Seminar hosted by local Environmental Health agencies.
- Plan menus that have a good dietary balance according to Canada Food's Guide.
- Work cooperatively with the Volunteer Program Director for meal schedules and meal themes.
- Ensure that the food preparation and storage of food complies with government and OCA regulations.
- Order food supplies and maintain records keeping purchases within budget allotment.
- Supervise, train and teach the Assistant Cook, Kitchen Assistant and CITs in their duties.
- Properly prepare the kitchen facilities for the camping season, and properly shut down the kitchen when the season is done.
- Work cooperatively with camp staff, and perform other duties as required, to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christian camping experience for all. Adhere to established camp and kitchen rules, procedures and routines.
Assistant Cook position filled
Assist with food handling, preparation, storage, clean-up and supervision of other kitchen staff. Ensure that the Dining Hall is a clean, tidy, and welcoming space for campers and staff members alike.
- Test drinking water daily and record results. Arrange to have drinking water tested weekly (in consultation with the Health and Safety Supervisor).
- Adhere to established camp and kitchen rules, procedures, and routines.
- Assist with the preparation, handling, serving, clean-up and storage of food.
- Assist in the supervision of the Kitchen Assistant and the CITs and Support Assistant when they are on kitchen/dining hall duty.
- Prepare the dining hall for the camp season. In conjunction with the Maintenance Supervisor, supervise the regular cleaning and tidying of the dining hall, including the washroom. Keep dining hall clear of clutter, AV equipment, and unnecessary decorations/items.
- Develop and implement plan for enhancing the welcoming atmosphere of the Dining Hall for campers and staff alike.
- Participate in general camp life whenever possible; attend scheduled staff training and spiritual direction sessions as well as general staff meetings.
- Work cooperatively with camp staff and perform other duties as required to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christian camping experience for all.
- Participate with enthusiasm in all activities and maintain open communication with all staff members.
